Believes he will be able to prevail with Mr Ashbury, who is the chief hautboy to the guards, and the little boy his son, who is a trumpet, that sounds with the hautboys as they march with the guards. He is the prettiest boy that ever I saw, and I believe your Grace may remember him, and hope he and his father will not be disagreeable to your Grace. ASHBURY, JOSEPH (1638-1720), actor and theatrical manager, born in London in 1638, of good family, was educated at Eton, and entered the army. Quartered in Ireland when the protectorate of Richard Cromwell came to an end, he was one of the officers who were dismissed under the regime of the revived Rump Parliament, and he was also one of those who, in the royalist interest, seized Dublin Castle in the December of 1659. At the Restoration he was rewarded by the lieutenancy of a company of foot which Charles II granted to the city of Dublin, and the new lord-lieutenant, the Duke of Ormond, made Ashbury in 1662 one of the gentlemen of his retinue and deputy master of the revels. In 1682 he became master of the revels and patentee. The ditties or privileges of the latter post seem to have been nominal, since for years the only playhouse in Dublin, the Smock Alley or Orange Street Theatre, had been closed. But Ashbury, whose first wife was the sister of an actor, seems at this time to have turned his attention to professional acting and to have given instructions in the art with eminent success. About 1674 both he and Mrs. Betterton are mentioned as teaching the Princess Anne, afterwards queen, to play Semandra in Lee's ‘Mithridates’ when acted at Whitehall by persons of high rank (cf. Miss Strickland’s Queens of England (1852), vii. 15). When, in celebration of the overthrow of the Stuart cause in Ireland, ‘Othello’ was acted (Decernber 1691) at Dublin by amateurs, most of them officers of the garrison, Ashbury, who superintended the performance and played Iago, is spoken of as the only professional actor among the performers. About the same time he engaged in London a company which included Wilks, and attempted to revive the drama in Ireland by reopening the theatre in Orange Street with ‘Othello' on 23 March 1692. By skillful management and by encouraging promising histrionic talent – Booth and Quin were introduced by him to the boards – Ashbury secured for the Dublin stage a great reputation. He himself was an excellent actor, and his second wife, also an actress, gave him material assistance. Colonel Careless in the 'Committee’ and Don Quixote were among his best parts. In his 78th year he continued to act with success, and he survived to the age of 82, dying in the summer or autumn of 1720.

ASHBURY, JOSEPH, was born in London, of a good family, in 1638. He was educated at Eton, entered the army, and rose to a captaincy in Ireland, where he attracted the attention of the Duke of Ormond, lord-lieutenant, who made him one of the gentlemen of his retinue, and deputy-master of the revels. In 1682, on the death of Mr. Ogilby, he was appointed master of the revels, and theatrical patentee for Ireland. At that time, and long after, there were no regular dramatic performances in Dublin, but they were resumed immediately on the conclusion of the war caused by the Revolution. In December, 1691, "Othello" was acted at the Orange-street Theatre, the part of Iago by Ashbury, and the remaining characters by amateurs, among whom was the afterwards celebrated Wilks, whose Othello was so highly applauded, that he determined to make the stage his profession. The success of the experiment was altogether so decided, that Ashbury went over to England to engage a regular company, and re-opened the theatre on the 23rd of March, 1692, the day on which peace was proclaimed, with a repetition of "Othello." From that time to the close of his life, Ashbury continued at the head of the drama in Ireland. As a manager he displayed great spirit, and reaped considerable profit. Among the first-rate performers he introduced to the public were Booth and Quin. As an actor he was considered one of the first of his time; and he was reputed the best teacher of his art, so far as it can be taught, in the kingdom. He had the honour of instructing Queen Anne, then princess, in the part of Semandra in "Mithridates," when that tragedy was performed by persons of rank at Whitehall; and he also had the direction of the stage on that occasion. Ashbury died at Dublin, July 24, 1720 in his eighty-third year; he retained his faculties to the last, and performed even youthful characters when upwards of eighty. He had raised the Irish stage to a degree of respectability which it had never before attained, and was succeeded in its management by his son-in-law, Mr. Thomas Elrington, himself a performer of celebrity. Mrs. Ashbury, who survived her husband a short time, had been a favourite actress in his company. Nottingham Archdeaconry, which was almost coextensive with the county of Nottingham, lay in the diocese and province of York, but it had substantially independent jurisdiction for both probate and the issuing of marriage licences. These are abstracts of the archdeaconry marriage licences: they usually state the groom's address, occupation, age, and condition; the bride's address, age and condition; and the names of the churches or parishes at which it was intended the marriage would be celebrated. Not all licences led to marriages. Where the age given is 21, it should be construed as '21 or over'. There was no obligation for the marriage to take place at the parish suggested, but the licence would only be valid within the county.
