      1822 : On 1 May 1822 Thomas ASTBURY was arrested in a charge of pig stealing. He was sentenced to serve the remainder of his seven years at Port Macquarie, and was transported there under the name of Thomas ASTBURY on the ship 'Lady Nelson' on 15 May

      The first Ashbury in Australia was a convict, born in Birmingham. He was a water-boatman at Barton on Irwell, when he was convicted to seven years transportation for larceny. He arrived at Botany Bay (Sydney) in 1815. He had a fairly colourful career in New South Wales, eventually settling in the Windsor-Richmond district, one of the first regions to be settled in Australia. He had a liaison with the daughter of a convict, born in Australia, called Eleanor Dunn. They had eight children, but Eleanor was married to another fellow, and did not marry Thomas until after her husband died in 1840.
